Special thanks to Pluto for leading me to the story behind this song! I found all the details here on Wikipedia. I never knew this was based on “O Solo Mio” or that Elvis specifically asked his studio to write lyrics so he could sing it. Or that he loved Mario Lanza’s version of “O Solo Mio.” Or that Lanza died the year before Elvis’s version was released.

“I could sing this song quite well in my younger days and my Father was a big singer so it reminds me of him and he spent all day everyday singing Mario Lanza songs so how odd you should find that connection. My father sometimes sang “Nobody Loves me I’m Nobody’s Child…” I was going to choose that as he would cry when he sang it…..that’s what being an evacuee child does for you but I thought it might be too depressing. Lol. You are very talented with computers I am lucky I can turn mine on and type lol. Keep up the good work. X” -Pluto

Here are both songs

Written by: Benjamin Levin, Nathan Perez, Magnus August Hoiberg, Ashley Frangipane, Brittany Hazzard | Album: A Mess of Blues | Released: 1960 | Lyrics here: Musixmatch
Written by: Alfredo Mazzucchi, Giancarlo Chiaramello, Giovanni Capurro, Eduardo Di Capua. Released: 1948. A good translation in Neapolitan and English by Heather Broster is here “O Solo Mio…” According to this article, “Behind the Meaning of ‘O Solo Mio..’” this song was credited to Eduardo Di Capua (1898) but it was actually written by Alfredo Mazzucchi. Di Capua purchased this and 22 other songs from Mazzucchi. Mazzucchi’s daughter sued to have her father’s name listed as the original composer and won the case in 1972.

I'd love to read your thoughts!
