I will not say the day is done nor bid the stars farewell.”

THE JOURNAL OF SAMWISE GAMGEE

Oct. 3 – Day 11 (4th from Bree): 15 miles

On the fourth day from Bree the hobbits and Strider spent all day traversing the Midgewater Marshes.  In the evening, they saw flashes of light from Weathertop.

Here below are the notes* Samwise Gamgee took along the journey. (Based on the meticulous milestone-marker notes on the Eowyn Challenge which are based on The Atlas of Middle Earth by Karen Fonstad which of course is based on all the wonderful works of J.R.R. Tolkien.).

We walked all day and we have to make camp here again. Strider says we’ll be out by tomorrow. Seems like we’ve been here for years. We can see Weathertop from here to the east and some kind of bright flashes of light from there, but nowhere else.**

**What neither Sam nor the companions could not have known was that the lights were Gandalf’s magic on Weathertop as he fought off the Nazgûl. Gandalf had arrived in Bree the day after they left, but because they told had told Barleyman they were headed for Weathertop, Gandalf road straight there. The remaining four Nazgûl attacked him there and he outwitted them all because…Gandalf.
