MD shared this song today. (Thank you. ∞♡∞)

“We went through a lot of heartache, a lot of BS together. People can be very judgmental. This is our song. We always saw each other clearly. Nothing else matters.”

My friend John recommended, Free Money by Patti Smith. John was engaged to my sister-in-love, Joy when she was killed in 1984 by a drunk driver.

John writes,

“I hear it as the cry of a young dreamer who wishes for a better life, for herself and her lover.  If only we can “find a ticket, win the lottery…”  She’s not singing about greed – free money means freedom from the grind of never having enough to lead a full life.  She wants to be generous, adventurous: “I’d take that money, buy you things you never had…”  She’s searching for love and meaning and freedom.

“While it would be several years from first hearing this song until I met Joy, this song could have been an anthem for us while we were dreaming together.

“‘…our troubles would be gone…'”

A Meet Cute featuring Sade. I love this story. Thank you, Carole!

“Here’s my favorite song that stopped me in my tracks when I first heard it. It reminds me of when I first met my hubby. I was only age 17 & was out watching live music at the Sugar Shack with my roommate Susie. He asked me to dance. Although I was dating two other guys I said yes. Then over the next few months ended up dropping the other two guys to date him exclusively. Later we were married and while birthing our two babies I played Sade in the delivery room.” -Carole

Thank you, John Olander for recommending this beautiful, soulful song. When I asked John why this song meant so much to him, he wrote:

I had a lot of slightly older boys who mentored me in sports when I was younger. We used to always sing it together. As I have matured and gotten well, it is a good mantra. Don’t be afraid to help others and don’t be afraid to ask for help either.

Special thanks to Judy ♥ for sharing her song story.

“When I hear this song, I think of all the plants and animals especially birds. Also the green grass the rivers and oceans. Just about everything but humans. Humans hurt each other, pass judgement and make war after war. I guess I just want to see beauty in the world as I’m aging. ☮️❤️” -Judy

My mom chose this song because it describes how we all sometimes feel — the need to reach beyond our lives and be free. We both adored the movie Yentl and every single song in it. Thanks for sharing your music memories, Mom. ♥

Special thanks to Pluto for leading me to the story behind this song! I found all the details here on Wikipedia. I never knew this was based on “O Solo Mio” or that Elvis specifically asked his studio to write lyrics so he could sing it. Or that he loved Mario Lanza’s version of “O Solo Mio.” Or that Lanza died the year before Elvis’s version was released.

“I could sing this song quite well in my younger days and my Father was a big singer so it reminds me of him and he spent all day everyday singing Mario Lanza songs so how odd you should find that connection. My father sometimes sang “Nobody Loves me I’m Nobody’s Child…” I was going to choose that as he would cry when he sang it…..that’s what being an evacuee child does for you but I thought it might be too depressing. Lol. You are very talented with computers I am lucky I can turn mine on and type lol. Keep up the good work. X” -Pluto
