My friend John recommended, Free Money by Patti Smith. John was engaged to my sister-in-love, Joy when she was killed in 1984 by a drunk driver.

John writes,

“I hear it as the cry of a young dreamer who wishes for a better life, for herself and her lover.  If only we can “find a ticket, win the lottery…”  She’s not singing about greed – free money means freedom from the grind of never having enough to lead a full life.  She wants to be generous, adventurous: “I’d take that money, buy you things you never had…”  She’s searching for love and meaning and freedom. 

“While it would be several years from first hearing this song until I met Joy, this song could have been an anthem for us while we were dreaming together.
