guilty until proven wealthy

I have never used our site to promote any politician’s agenda, but this issue impacts every single one of us, most especially those who are homeless and/or in poverty.  If you have a moment, please read this article about how poverty makes criminals of people who have not yet been convicted for a crime, and what Senator Bernie Sander’s wants to do about it.

In a country in which we pride ourselves on the principle of “innocent until proven guilty” we should not be keeping hundreds of thousands of people locked up before they have actually been convicted of a crime.

And yet in 2016, more than 65 percent of the over 700,000 people in county or city jails on any given day in the United States were “unconvicted” — meaning that more than 400,000 people were in jail who had not been convicted of a crime, often because they lack the money to pay bail. In other words, we have criminalized poverty.

That is not acceptable. Pretrial detention should be not based on how much money a person has, what kind of mood the judge is in on a given day, or even what judge the case happens to come before.

How Introverts Make Friends

  1. Dogs* count as friends.  (*includes all non-humans, animate or inanimate, imaginary or real, alive or otherwise.)
  2. An extrovert found them, liked them and adopted them.
How Introverts Make Friends

This was posted ↑ this way on Reddit and re-created for under1000skies with the *details after reading several comments by cat owners, and others. =)

Are you an introvert?  (If so, put your hand up, then quickly down again.)  Me too.  Some of the most interesting people I’ve never met are, or were, introverts.  Jane Austin, Albert Einstein, Dr. Seuss… (An extensive, and delightfully surprising, list of more introverts is here).

The internet is the perfect place for introverts.  Finally, we can unite (separately, in our own quiet homes.)  Go to any social media, and we have our own hashtag.  For example: #introverts on Tumblr.

Well met, dear introvert, and Happy Monday (fun day) to all, intro-, extro- and ambiverts (balanced between both).  I hope that this re-created graphic made you smile today.  If you are an introvert, here’s a fun test.  “What kind of Introvert are you? (Mine was “healer.”)

The Champion- very smart, unique, and has a vast intellect that helps them to create and invent
The Artist- non-conformist and multi-talented with an eye for change and natural expression
The Mastermind- determined, strong and inspiring, while also very guarded and private
The Protector- emotionally complex, social, outgoing, kind and yet paradoxical
The Healer- understanding, spiritual, altruistic, calm and relaxed
The Architect- knowledgeable, hands on, intuitive, and enjoys teaching others

Starting today, I’m going to do an audio version of the posts both here, on Niki Flow and on Grammy Miami.  The first two are so that my husband (or anyone who doesn’t have a lot of time to read) can enjoy these too; the last is so I can send the link to my daughter for my beautiful granddaughters.  My husband travels a lot and is my biggest fan, but he doesn’t often get a chance to read during the day.   This way I can send him the link and he can listen while driving.  The audio isn’t the best here, but we have better mics to be installed soon.

rainer rilke surrender gems 4.78

"Let everything happen to you, beauty and terror. Just keep going. No feeling is final." -Rainer Rilke

René Karl Wilhelm Johann Josef Maria Rilke (4 December 1875 – 29 December 1926), better known as Rainer Maria Rilke was a Bohemian-Austrian poet and novelist. He is “widely recognized as one of the most lyrically intense German-language poets”. He wrote both verse and highly-lyrical prose. Several critics have described Rilke’s work as inherently “mystical”

Happy Water Day/Day of Mercury/Anything-goes-day.  Today is in praise of the mystical poets who were rudely criticized and misunderstood.  Really? Who criticizes poetry? That’s like being critical of the cadence of a person’s breath or the rhythm of their gait.  Oh, wait! I think I know who would do such a silly thing.  Those without the ability in their souls to hear music or to, themselves, sing.  We shall know them by their pointing fingers, then, and pity their deafness.  Amen.  /nf

The Stolen Child

W. B. Yeats, 1865 – 1939

Where dips the rocky highland
Of Sleuth Wood in the lake,
There lies a leafy island
Where flapping herons wake
The drowsy water rats;
There we’ve hid our faery vats,
Full of berrys
And of reddest stolen cherries.
Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world’s more full of weeping than you can understand.

Where the wave of moonlight glosses
The dim gray sands with light,
Far off by furthest Rosses
We foot it all the night,
Weaving olden dances
Mingling hands and mingling glances
Till the moon has taken flight;
To and fro we leap
And chase the frothy bubbles,
While the world is full of troubles
And anxious in its sleep.
Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world’s more full of weeping than you can understand.

Where the wandering water gushes
From the hills above Glen-Car,
In pools among the rushes
That scarce could bathe a star,
We seek for slumbering trout
And whispering in their ears
Give them unquiet dreams;
Leaning softly out
From ferns that drop their tears
Over the young streams.
Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world’s more full of weeping than you can understand.

Away with us he’s going,
The solemn-eyed:
He’ll hear no more the lowing
Of the calves on the warm hillside
Or the kettle on the hob
Sing peace into his breast,
Or see the brown mice bob
Round and round the oatmeal chest.
For he comes, the human child,
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world’s more full of weeping than he can understand.

Did you know that three days in the Celtic Otherworld is three years here on Earth? I learned that recently while watching Myths and Monsters narrated by Nicholas Day.  I find the thought very comforting.

There is a new page here on under1000skies called Missing Benjamin. All updates about Ben will be kept here from now on.  All links from past updates to will be here, as time allows, in chrono order.

Have a beautiful Memorial Day weekend.  See you Tuesday.
