“They know all of our triggers and when and where to push them. They teach us how to forgive and how to overcome fear, anger, and frustration, and all of the other barriers that we’ve constructed to love. Our families often teach us the greatest lessons about love with both their presence and their absence, their kindness and their cruelty, and even when that love has to be offered from a distance.”

“As some of you know, when I was very young, had all of my hair and a few pounds lighter, I marched. There were people who said that we’ll never get a Civil Rights Act, that we would never get a Voting Rights Act, but we marched. We were arrested. We were jailed. We were beaten, but we didn’t give up! You must not give up. But I’ll tell you one thing that we all can do — we ALL can do — is continue to be what I call “The Beloved Community.” We are one people. We are one family. We all live in the same house. Not just the American house but the World house. We are all brothers and sisters. It doesn’t matter whether we are black or white, Latino, Asian American or Native American. We are one people. We are one family. Maybe our fore-mothers and our forefathers all came to this land in different ships, but we’re all in the same boat now.”

-Congressman John Lewis in a speech on June 30, 2018 in Atlanta, Georgia.
