A Small Needful Fact

Is that Eric Garner worked
for some time for the Parks and Rec.
Horticultural Department, which means,
perhaps, that with his very large hands,
perhaps, in all likelihood,
he put gently into the earth
some plants which most likely,
some of them, in all likelihood,
continue to grow, continue
to do what such plants do, like house
and feed small and necessary creatures,
like being pleasant to touch and smell,
like converting sunlight
into food, like making it easier
for us to breathe.

Ross Gay

I get a poem every day from Poets.org and this poem came into my mailbox earlier this week. I was charmed by this lovely man, Eric Garner.  Yet, there was more to this, and I knew it.  I looked up his name, and my heart broke. Again.

Later, after equilibrium returned, I asked myself a question I’ve been asking myself repeatedly since George Floyd died:   How did I not know this?

Please take good care of yourself this weekend. Hug your families.  I lost two people I love this year, one that I knew since my first day on earth.  I still can’t wrap my head around it.  Life is hard for all of us right now, but we are in this together and we will get through this together.

With love and hope,

♥. Niki
