A place where I can go
To take this off my shoulders
Someone take me home

Have you ever heard of the words “hiraeth” and “saudade”? The definitions are

Hiraeth (Welsh)
“…homesickness tinged with grief or sadness over the lost or departed. Also, homesickness for a place that no longer exists; or homesickness for a home that has never existed.”

Saudade (Portuguese)
“…the feeling of longing for something or someone you love and which/who is lost. Fado music relates to this.”

The Gem today is from a song called “Home” I heard in the film Bright which I play over and over. There’s a phrase in the lyrics that relates to these two words:

Look, I’ve been through so much pain
And it’s hard to maintain any smile on my face
‘Cause there’s madness on my brain
So I gotta make it back, but my home ain’t on the map
Gotta follow what I’m feeling to discover where it’s at
I need the (memory)
In case this fate is forever, just to be sure these last days are better
And if I have any (enemies)
To give me the strength to look the devil in the face and make it home safe

For me personally, this feeling relates to a home I had with my children, the last time we were together and happy. That little house on the railroad tracks on Third Street was my favorite. But it was lost to us and we can never go back.

And now, our entire earth and way of life feel nothing like home.  We’re mourning this loss together.  Things will never be the same again.

Friends and I were talking about this grief recently.  Suddenly, this came to my heart when I wrote to a dear friend:

I think we are meant to find our home in each other right now. We are the constants through eternity, our souls are forever united. Forever. We will always find each other. We will always be home, together.

SaudadeHiraeth.

Each other. Always.
