“Very often, you know, you stop walking because you say, ‘Well, I’m tired of climbing this hill. I’m never going to get to the top.’ And you’re only two steps from the top.”

-Morgan Freeman

A couple of weeks ago, some friends and I collaborated on a birthday card for Morgan Freeman.  While watching his show, The Story of God with Morgan Freeman, I learned his birthday is on June 1st.  I began following him on social media, and yesterday he posted something on Instagram:

@morganfreeman
You are never too old to have a revelation.

This gives me hope. Grateful for another soul teacher today.

Special thanks to Rajni for contributing today’s quote.  I wanted to authenticate this attribution and learned it has been contested.  While in Hawaii in 1963, Covey found this written in a book.  He never could find the source and even tried going back to the library years later but the book (and the library) were long gone.  The story about Covey’s search is here on Quote Investigator – great site!

Covey is a very quotable source.  He went on to add to this great advice with more:

“I am not the product of my circumstances.  I am the product of my choices.”

I always thought it would be handy to have a flashing neon sign in that space between stimulus (especially conflict) and response, maybe something like:

THINK, THEN SPEAK!

or

LISTEN, THEN REACT!

or

CHOOSE LOVE, NOT FEAR!

What would be on the neon sign in your space between stimulus and response?

Special thanks to Rajni who shared today’s quote.  A bit about Anita Desai:

“Anita Desai is an Indian novelist and the Emerita John E. Burchard Professor of Humanities at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As a writer she has been shortlisted for the Booker Prize three times.” (Wikipedia)

Richard’s photo of this little tree sparrow really captures my heart.  Sparrows have been my favorite bird since I was very young.  We lived in a city, where everything was concrete except the park.  Outside our dining-room window was a rooftop patio.  This is where I formed some of my earliest memories.  I grew my first garden there in a small pot, and my mom taught me how to feed the birds.  She clicked her tongue to call them, and they all came — sparrows, pigeons and even an occasional crow.  I used to think my mom was magical, like Sleeping Beauty, to be able to bring the birds with this clicking sound.   Sometimes the lovely ones with the most beautiful feathers visited, cardinals and jays.  But I always loved the little brown sparrows best.

This quote today spoke to my heart too.  Imagine how dense with beauty the birds like this sparrow are, flying free as they do to so many wonderful places.

This is the full quote.  Special thanks to WaY for sharing this quote and to Alisa Reagan for sharing this beautiful photo. ♡

“I want a life that sizzles and pops and makes me laugh out loud. And I don’t want to get to the end, or to tomorrow, even, and realize that my life is a collection of meetings and pop cans and errands and receipts and dirty dishes. I want to eat cold tangerines and sing out loud in the car with the windows open and wear pink shoes and stay up all night laughing and paint my walls the exact color of the sky right now. I want to sleep hard on clean white sheets and throw parties and eat ripe tomatoes and read books so good they make me jump up and down, and I want my everyday to make God belly laugh, glad that he gave life to someone who loves the gift.”   Shauna Niequist
