Below is a sneak peek into Samwise Gamgee’s journal, illustrated by his daughter Elanor. Below that, why this challenge has been my passionate heartsong for the past 15 years.

“It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.”

-J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings

DAY 1 – SEPT. 23RD – 18 MILES
On September 23rd, early in the evening, Frodo, Sam, and Pippin slipped away from Bag End. (Fellowship of the Ring, Chapter 3, “Three Is Company”). The “official” story of their leaving is that Frodo is moving to Crick Hollow and Sam and Pippin are to accompany and help him. The real story is, Frodo is the bearer of the One Ring. He must take the Ring to Elrond in Rivendell while trying to stay hidden…

“Listen to the mustn’ts, child. Listen to the don’ts. Listen to the shouldn’ts, the impossibles, the won’ts. Listen to the never haves, then listen close to me… Anything can happen, child. Anything can be.”
― Shel Silverstein

“The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

“But I know, somehow, that only when it is dark enough can you see the stars.”
― Martin Luther King, Jr.

“Life’s under no obligation to give us what we expect.”
― Margaret Mitchell

“The very least you can do in your life is figure out what you hope for. And the most you can do is live inside that hope. Not admire it from a distance but live right in it, under its roof.”
― Barbara Kingsolver

“All’s well that ends better.” -J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings

This is the last in the Tolkien-quotes series.  I hope you’ve enjoyed reading these as much as I’ve enjoyed creating them.  Once again, special thanks to the Pixabay and Picmonkey photographers.

The journey of Samwise, Frodo, and company continues to Rivendell here:

ÉOWYN, Bag End to Rivendell-Frodo.

I’m taking a break for a bit and will be back with Gems featuring some new photos from Cord X. and a poem from Johnny O. the week of November 18th.  We’ll restart the videos and newsletters every week after that too.

Until then, may all your journeys be green and golden.

♥.

“Yet such is oft the course of deeds that move the wheels of the world: small hands do them because they must, while the eyes of the great are elsewhere.” -J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings

Gil-galad was an Elven-king.
Of him the harpers sadly sing;
the last whose realm was fair and free
between the Mountains and the Sea.

His sword was long, his lance was keen.
His shining helm afar was seen;
the countless stars of heaven’s field
were mirrored in his silver shield.

But long ago he rode away,
and where he dwelleth none can say;
for into darkness fell his star
in Mordor where the shadows are.

-J.R.R. Tolkien
