Gems 4.33 Valentine's Day 2018

The quote “Anything worth doing is worth doing slowly” is by Mae West.  In this photo (photographer unknown) is a display of the Mae West Lips Sofa,

“…a surrealist sculpture in the form of a sofa by Salvador Dalí.  It is made of wood and satin and “…was shaped in 1937 after the lips of actress Mae West, whom Dalí apparently found fascinating.”

“Edward James, a rich British patron of the Surrealists in the 1930s, originally commissioned this piece from Dalí. It is now part of the art collections at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, South Holland. Another version is on display at the Dalí Theatre and Museum in Figueres, Catalonia, Spain.

“In 1972, Italian designer group Studio 65 produced an updated version of Dalí’s Mae West Lips Sofa, called the Marilyn Bocca Sofa in honor of actress and sex symbol Marilyn Monroe. Unlike Dalí’s original work, the Marilyn Bocca Sofa has a more practical use in the home, and has become an icon of classic modern design.”

A bit of art history for Valentine’s Day, my favorite day of the year.  A day to celebrate the most powerful force on earth — what could be better?  This isn’t just a day for sweethearts. It’s a day to celebrate all the love in our lives. Love is what makes life worth living.

We love our connection to you, dear creative soul.  Happy Valentine’s Day and thank you for your love, support and friendship.

Me and Bobby McGee by Kris Kristofferson | Photo “SciFi Sky” by Niki Flow

ME AND BOBBY MCGEE
Busted flat in Baton Rouge, waitin’ for a train
And I’s feelin’ near as faded as my jeans
Bobby thumbed a diesel down, just before it rained
It rode us all the way to New Orleans
I pulled my harpoon out of my dirty red bandanna
I was playin’ soft while Bobby sang the blues, yeah
Windshield wipers slappin’ time, I was holdin’ Bobby’s hand in mine
We sang every song that driver knew
Freedom’s just another word for nothin’ left to lose
Nothin’, don’t mean nothin’ hon’ if it ain’t free, no no
And, feelin’ good was easy, Lord, when he sang the blues
You know, feelin’ good was good enough for me
Good enough for me and my Bobby McGhee
From the Kentucky coal mine to the California sun
There Bobby shared the secrets of my soul
Through all kinds of weather, through everything we done
Yeah, Bobby baby kept me from the cold
One day up near Salinas, Lord, I let him slip away
He’s lookin’ for that home, and I hope he finds it
But, I’d trade all of my tomorrows, for a single yesterday
To be holdin’ Bobby’s body next to mine
Freedom’s just another word for nothin’ left to lose
Nothin’, that’s all that Bobby left me, yeah
But, feelin’ good was easy, Lord, when he sang the blues
Hey, feelin’ good was good enough for me, mm-hmm
Good enough for me and my Bobby McGhee
La da da
La da da da
La da da da da da da da
La da da da da da da da
Bobby McGhee, yeah
La da da da da da da
La da da da da da da
La da da da da da da
Bobby McGhee, yeah
La da La la da da la da da la da da
La da da da da da da da da
Hey, my Bobby
Oh, my Bobby McGhee, yeah
La la la la la la la la
La la la la la la la la la la la la la la la
Hey, my Bobby
Oh, my Bobby McGhee, yeah
Well, I call him my lover, call him my man
I said, I call him my lover did the best I can, c’mon
Hey now, Bobby now
Hey now, Bobby McGhee, yeah
Woo
La da, la da, la da, la da, la da, la da, la da, la la
Hey, hey, hey Bobby McGhee, yeah
La da, la da, la da, la da, la da, la da, la da, la
Hey, hey, hey, Bobby McGhee, yeah

John YCP2

You Can’t Protect It
When you live out of bags,
It’s tough to keep things straight.
Especially because, typically, they are
All sorts of Opaque.
Where’s this? Where’s that?
I thought it was in this one.
Dammit, what a bitch this.
Rummaging is no fun.
Oh well, I’ll tear everything completely apart
And stack all my bags like a fine work of Art.
Without my phone and charger, I’ll be hosed.
No work for me today, I suppose.
Searched every zip compartment in my artful stack.
Only to discover, once again, my phone got jacked!

-John Olander

John Olander, known to his friends as “Johnny O” is a self-employed change-maker currently living in Denver Colorado. He has been “on a camping trip” for over ten years and understands life on the streets better than most. Yet this hardship has not made John bitter, only better. Nearly every day when he is not engaged in a search for food or shelter (from 4am until nearly midnight), John is helping others on the street. About one-third of John’s day is spent on transportation — on buses, subways, and walking to find jobs, food and shelter for a single day. Yet through all this, John has taken the time to be supportive and submit poetry for under1000skies.  I’m so grateful for our connection.  Johnny O and I became friends about a year ago when he became one of the first supporters of under1000skies. He is very dear to us all here, and we look forward to more creative content from Johnny in the years to come.
