The quote “Anything worth doing is worth doing slowly” is by Mae West. In this photo (photographer unknown) is a display of the Mae West Lips Sofa,
“…a surrealist sculpture in the form of a sofa by Salvador Dalí. It is made of wood and satin and “…was shaped in 1937 after the lips of actress Mae West, whom Dalí apparently found fascinating.”
“Edward James, a rich British patron of the Surrealists in the 1930s, originally commissioned this piece from Dalí. It is now part of the art collections at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, South Holland. Another version is on display at the Dalí Theatre and Museum in Figueres, Catalonia, Spain.
“In 1972, Italian designer group Studio 65 produced an updated version of Dalí’s Mae West Lips Sofa, called the Marilyn Bocca Sofa in honor of actress and sex symbol Marilyn Monroe. Unlike Dalí’s original work, the Marilyn Bocca Sofa has a more practical use in the home, and has become an icon of classic modern design.”
A bit of art history for Valentine’s Day, my favorite day of the year. A day to celebrate the most powerful force on earth — what could be better? This isn’t just a day for sweethearts. It’s a day to celebrate all the love in our lives. Love is what makes life worth living.
We love our connection to you, dear creative soul. Happy Valentine’s Day and thank you for your love, support and friendship.
