A friend asked in a letter,
“How are you today?”
And I wanted to answer
the usual, “Doing well” or “I’m okay.”
But as I began to write
My fingers stopped after “I”
And all of a sudden I knew
I wasn’t going to lie.
So I poured out my heart in a letter.
By the time I got to the end
I realized I felt a bit better.
I asked myself, “Do I send?”
Nothing had changed, yet something had
I put a burden down for a time.
I started another letter.
“I loved your letter. I’m doing fine.”
