Color and Opposites

I hope you’re having a beautiful day. ♡
Here’s what new under1000skies.

The Power of Color and Opposites

One day I learned I was dying. I had so many clots in my lungs that they couldn’t count them, and any ONE of these could have killed me by moving to my heart or head. I reached for the light and wisdom anywhere I could find it.

I latched on to quotes like I was hearing whispers from every age of time, all the brilliant people who had gone through pain. I became obsessed with finding quotes and, while doing so, discovered a secret. In the coming paragraphs, I’ll share that secret with you.

Incidentally, I was recently scanned head-to-toe at a hospital and learned that every single clot is gone.

In 2010 or so, I decided I wanted to gift the world for being given another chance at life. My goal is to create 10,000 graphics from inspiring quotes. Since then I’ve made about 1500 or so, maybe more. Great Advice from Wise People

wgudr51

One of my first graphics.

Quotes are like our wise elders at the village fire, saying the right thing exactly when our hearts need to hear it.  I learned a lot by nearly dying.  I wanted to find a way to articulate and share this knowledge.

The ancients believed there are three stages of life:

maiden

mother

crone

We don’t lose the maiden when we enter the mother stage. She becomes part of us. We don’t lose the mother when we enter the crone stage — we are now all three. Mother is not literal. It is about creativity and wild exploration, the time of the “succulent wild woman”  (Sark).  Crone isn’t a hag. It doesn’t mean weakness. It means incredible wisdom and power. This is the stage I’m entering. For the first time in my entire life, I feel ready to step into who I am.

As a crone, one of my sacred duties is to listen, and (when asked) to offer succinct advice. Crones have their shit together by now and if they don’t, they put it away. It’s served its purpose. That’s not to say that current lessons aren’t teaching. But the need to be understood by the world at large has passed. It’s time to understand.

Crone women, wise women, however, need each other.  We are all always learning.  So we look ahead, to those who are walking the path before us; with their wisdom, we can look back with a new understanding; and, always, we stay present and grateful for every moment.  We take nothing for granted, not even our next breath.

PERSPECTIVE

One of the things we all struggle with daily is negative, toxic people.  When people are unkind, it’s unpleasant.  It may ruin our day. When people we love are unkind or use words like “disappointed” it hurts a hell of a lot more, and the hurt may last a long time. I learned something that helped me with this.  Disappointment and judgment is the choice they make and the price they pay for expectation.

“Trade your expectations for appreciation, and the world changes.” A.Robbins.

THE POWER OF COLOR AND OPPOSITES

Feelings have colors for me. Years ago, I discovered a way out of a clinical depression — the result of being prescribed the wrong drug by my doctor — using color, and opposites. It took a long time.  It also took a dear friend telling me it would get better. During that time, I felt like I lived inside a dementor — as if all my feelings were stripped from me and “I’d never be cheerful again.” Once I healed, I still dreaded (for years) the wisps of feeling that the dementor was back. Eventually, even those feelings went away too.

Here’s my color list for feelings. After each color, I explain why it feels that way to me.  So to start, make a list of colors and assign an emotion to each one and, if you want, a reason why it feels that way. Your list may be quite different.

Purple

depression, shame

Blue
sadness

Indigo
for pain;

Spring green
Hope, my hub, is spring green, and…

Forest green
happiness
is the color of the forest,
of the grass after rain.

yellow
Excitement
bright sunshine, open eyes,
far horizons, clear skies,
new growth in Spring (forsythia first),
and anything…is…possible!

orange
Irritable,
cooled-down red,
yellowed-over pink,
a color that is good
for a piece of fruit or an old cat
in the afternoon sun.

red
Everyone knows that anger is red.
Bloodshed red, but…

scarlet
rage is scarlet, a deeper hue…
white-hot, furnace-new,
an anger that cleanses instead of drains.

Brown
is the color of coffee
and tea and chocolate,
of the soil in my little window garden.
Brown is beautiful.

Grey
is a non-feeling, a Twilight Zone
where no colors exist at all,
a two-dimensional, flattened-out world
where you can’t even feel own presence,
let alone anyone elses

black.
is for fear –
fear is the deepest opposite of love.

Edited for clarity.

The Secret of Opposites / Color

The secret of opposites led me to find an opposite quote for every bad emotion, and these are the quotes I turned into graphics for Rx-for-Healing. This became a book called The Power of Opposites.  It’s a long-term project because I’m doing all the artwork and photography for it. And all the quotes have to be Public Domain to avoid copyright infringement. The book will be softcover. It will have tabs and will be color-coded according to mood (sound familiar?) = ) and each tab will direct you to illustrated quotes about the opposite.

HOW TO CREATE YOUR OWN COLOR/OPPOSITES WORKBOOK – 7 EASY STEPS

How to Create a Quote Journal - under1000skies

Create Your Journal!

You can make your own workbook right now.

Notebook How-To

1. List.
Make a list of negative emotions you normally feel.

2. Opposites.
Write what you think is the opposite of that emotion.

3. Color.
Assign a color to each positive emotion you are feeling.  You chose which words and colors you want to use.  This is just for you.

4. Organization.
Get a notebook with tabs.  Put pages between the tabs for writing quotes.  Use color tabs, or pages, or artwork as dividers.  Let your imagination soar here.

5. Organization – Tabs.
Under each tab, save a quote that speaks to your heart.  Say, for example, you have a list of negative emotions:

  • Pain
  • Apathy
  • Fear
  • The opposites of those, you decide, are:
  • Joy
  • Passion
  • Hope

In your notebook, you now have three color-coded tabs. Put a number of blank pages in between these tabs to write on.  This is where you’ll write all the great advice from wise people over the ages that speaks directly to your heart.

6. Google.
Go to Google and type: “quotes about (emotion)” for ideas.  For example, type “quotes about joy,” and click on the link. Usually, Brainy Quote or Good Reads come up first.  Both have a big selection of great quotes.

7.  Write.
Copy down a quote you like for the emotion in your search.  If you write just one quote a day, you’ll have at least 365 in a year.  If you write two a day, you’ll have over 700 in a year.

8. Read until you feel better.
Whenever you’re upset, identify the emotion, then figure out its opposite.  Then, tab to your favorite quotes and read until you feel better. This works really well.  I’ve used it repeatedly over the years to turn my mind away from anger, pain, worry and all the negative emotions back to the light.
That’s the key.

10,000 Graphics

I wasn’t too good at making graphics at first, but this Lifetime Aspiration (10,000 graphics) has made me realize that trial and error and practice is a great way to learn.

Here are some examples of graphics / opposite emotions. You may feel completely different about what the opposite of these emotions is.

EXAMPLES

Example 1: Loss/Let Go

Emotion:Loss
Opposite: Let Go

6bcihgu

Example 2:  Hate Job/Build Your Dream

Emotion: I hate my job.
Opposite: Build your dream even it it’s only 10 minutes a day. It adds up.

Example 3:  Meh/Appreciation, Awe, Wonder

Emotion:  Meh
Opposite:  Appreciate Art and Beauty Everywhere

CONNECTION

If you start an emotion “notebook” you’re welcome to share it. I’d love to see it.  under1000skies has always been about connection and providing inspiration, and about sharing our favorite artwork, writing, photography and quotes.  These all uplift our spirits and help us when we’re hurting. I look forward to your creations.

Rx-for-Healing started in 2012.

A few years ago I heard Dr. Christiana Northrup being interviewed by the makers of Hungry for Change.  She spoke about how she helps her patients go from being their own worst enemy to best friend. This inspired me so much that I began Rx-for-Healing to share my graphics aspiration with my friends.

For years, I sent out two quotes a day to remind some friends to do mirror affirmations. You go to a mirror and say this:

RxForLove-1-1

“I accept you and love you exactly as you are right now.”

If you do it this affirmation twice a day for 30 days straight, without missing,  Dr. Northrup said, you begin to change.   She was right.

Warning: It is hard!  It takes enormous courage. It may take you longer than 30 days to see a difference.  It took me months and months.  But then, I was fully committed for most of my life to self-destruction.  Lucky for me, “I’m not that person any more.” (Ian Sheppard).

The Rx-for-Healing origin story is here. If you accept this challenge, the site includes some (free/forever) tools.

I hope you find this useful.

June 8, 2018 Update

Today I created my first Chapter Sample Page.  One of emotions I have experienced the most in the past few years since Ben disappeared has been fear. I needed to find a way to heal from big illnesses and diseases that got worse after Ben left. I needed to get stronger and to continue my heart-songs.  Most of all, I needed to be useful to my family.  I wasn’t functioning.  Every day without news, it got worse.  The fear was, quite literally, crippling me.  So I spent a lot of time focused on finding quotes about the opposite of Fear:  Hope.  Love is the opposite of fear too.  So is faith, but my faith is tied up with old tapes. Hope was far less complicated.  (The “faith” and “love” chapter sample pages are coming soon.  Probably 50 percent of my favorite quotes are about love.)  .

I hope you’re having a beautiful day. ♡

I confess there was another reason for halting the daily photos for under1000skies. I struggle with panic disorder and agoraphobia. Since we began three years ago, I have yet to go to the city and personally hand an artist pack to any homeless person. I am good at organization and get many things done online but until I was able to do the work I was asking my volunteers to do I felt like a fraud. I believe this is what I need to do next — the next-right thing. I need to find a way to become personally face-to-face involved. When I learned about the ministroke and damage to emotion and language centers of my brain, I believed that having a label and a physical reason and starting point for everything that’s wrong with my brain was a cure in and of itself.. I believed naming it and knowing it’s source would make it lose it’s power over me. This seemed to work for a while but I’m back to the same implosion of space, finding it difficult to push beyond boundaries again. I thought I should tell you this because you’ve been generous with your support, and with providing beautiful quotes and photographs, and this only added to my guilt of being unable to do what is the absolute heart of this service: to meet these artists, these men and women who are currently between homes, to speak to them and ask them personally what they find beautiful, and to tell them about my dream of connecting creative souls like them around the world through photography and the Internet. Until I can do that I’m just propping up other peoples’ good work — or at least that’s how it feels to me. Thank you for listening. 💕.

under1000skies – A History

thurman-come-alive

Howard Thurman at Marsh Chapel March 6, 1959 Historical

October 1, 2013

I had no idea where we were headed when I published the first photo on my brand new site. I named it under1000skies because the sky is endlessly beautiful and different every single day. I’m grateful for the journey since then; perhaps not for every moment of it, but I’m definitely grateful for the lessons.

2013-2015

To make our new logo on our “About Us” page, I used the first photo I ever published on this blog. It was just a photo with the caption, “Before the Storm, Delaware City.” Over the next two years I published maybe six photos and poems, if that. Then I got the idea for Gems. The first two Gems were published on September 2, 2015, nearly two years after the first photo. Even at that point I hadn’t yet thought about the idea for getting cameras to homeless creatives. At first the photos were created to replace Rx-for-Healing, twice daily reminders to do mirror affirmations.

Summer 2015

HORNFEATHER FOR BLOGDuring the summer of 2015, my oldest son Benjamin Archer and his girlfriend Tessa visited us. They both offered to contribute their beautiful photos and while they stayed with us we talked about the direction of under1000skies a little. Ben had been homeless by choice, living from his car, selling his hand-carved jewelry creations. He had some tough times when he lost his ID and all his money. He lived in the woods and built a shelter and got to know some of the homeless people in Durango CO. When he met Tessa in 2015, they traveled all over over the United States during the next few months. Ben taught Tessa how to carve the bison-horn jewelry, which he learned from Jimmy Hornfeather in Arizona.

Fall/Winter 2015

Most of Ben’s friends were, technically, “homeless,” but they didn’t see themselves that way. Ben preferred the term “nomadic.” I liked “currently between homes” when I was homeless. No matter how you say it though, for some the hardships are not temporary, and the pain is often unrelenting. Isolation is one of the worst pains of all. I felt that keenly even when I had a roof over my head. I wanted to find a way to create connection, to hear and see the stories that creative people tell. So some time during 2015 or so is when the idea for artist packs came to be.

January 2016

Ben came to stay with us in January, 2016 after wrecking his car. He got me out walking a lot more and helped us with some great information about health and supplements. He was tireless, always moving and rarely home.

February 12, 2016

On February 12th I wrote this about Ben

Son-shine

My oldest son is staying with us now and has been such an encouragement and good example. He is learning musical healing techniques, Ayurvedic yoga, herbal healing and meditation. I’m learning with him! It’s been a joy to talk to him every day about everything he’s learned. I’m stronger and healthier than I’ve been in a long time using his suggestions and especially getting rid of all the toxins in our home. We eat really clean now, and almost everything is from one-ingredient organic sources. We rarely eat meat and most of protein comes from fish and plants. We recently joined our local, organic co-op which also has a huge selection of fresh-cut herbs. This summer we’ll be growing our own herbs and vegetables. Our entire backyard will be rototillered as soon as the ground thaws. There will be lots of room for herbs and veggies.

February 14, 2016

On February 14th I e-published my first book Elanthian Love Songs and announced that 50 percent the profits would be contributed to under1000skies for buying artist packs. Once I paid off my artist and editor, it would be 100 percent. (We were able to do that by the end of 2016 so it’s now 100 percent).

February 24, 2016

On February 24th, I went for another walk with Ben and took this photo. I didn’t know at the time it would be our last together. On March 2nd Ben disappeared. I posted a lot about it every day on under1000skies but then we, as a family, decided this kind of in-depth information about him might be really embarrassing for him. If Ben’s being out of sorts was temporary, this wouldn’t help. We hoped he would be back when he was ready, so I unpublished everything.

February 28th or March 6th 2016 –and- “Maybe in April” 2016

In the meantime, Ben was reportedly spotted by two witnesses from our town. The first siting was at the library on the 6th of March (or not — the librarian wasn’t sure if she saw him before or after he disappeared but, based on her testimony, the police chose to close the missing person case). Then Ben was allegedly seen again at our local market by our neighbor in early April. Unfortunately, our neighbor didn’t tell us about seeing Ben until nearly a month later in early May and by then details were fuzzy.

Autumn 2016

After some family discussions, we removed all personal information about Ben from this site.  We felt it might be embarrassing to him, that he had perhaps left by choice despite the sketchy circumstances.   We restarted under1000skies and I kept any news about Ben on my personal blog.

c.Spring, 2016

In 2016 I met through one of our most generous contributing photographers, Nicole, our first homeless creative, John Olander (Johnny O).

January 2017

A retired homicide detective in DC helped us, through NAMus.gov, to get Ben’s Missing Person’s case re-opened. This was crucial in order for his name to appear in their database, but it took nearly a year before our Chief of Police, Chief David Baylor agreed. To this day I have no idea why. Very grateful for Pam at NAMus.gov and Jimmy at the Delaware State Medical Examiner’s office for all their help during this harrowing time.

Ben’s page and info is here: Ben Archer: Case #33696

c.July 2017

Then in 2017 I met through Simbi Cord X, another homeless creative in San Antonio. So we are growing.

This dream has grown organically, and very slowly. The journey of under1000skies is closely interwoven with my own. I had no idea when I took that first photo what would happen in the years to come. None of us knows, of course. I think that’s what is so magnificent and challenging about our lives. This moment truly is enough.

Thank you for sharing this moment with me. May you find joy every day of your journey in this new year and throughout your life.
