“All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”  J.R.R. Tolkien

=) SURPRISE! (=

Happy Saturday!  In case you are surprised to see a Gem today, please visit our new page ÉOWYN.  Every day for four weeks, from October 14 to November 10, we’ll be creating new pages for the journey from Bag End to Rivendell made by Frodo and companions in J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved trilogy, The Lord of the Rings.  For the first three of these weeks, this will coincide with a walking challenge, walking through Earth and tracking miles on Middle Earth, being hosted on Kindspring.org from October 14 to November 3.  All welcome.   This began in on under1000skies in September 2015 and was meant to be at least a yearly event but life got in the way as it does sometimes.  Once this current journey and all the milestones are finished, we’ll do this at least once a year until all 18 walks through Middle Earth (17 official and one I’m winging completely) are finished. “Ecstatic Love is an ocean, and the Milky Way is a flake of foam floating on it.” -Rumi

Morning Edit 22July19 c.8am

I fixed the photo on the Gem.  It’s so gorgeous and I didn’t want any of it cut from the frame. I also posted a link to the photo.  Then I started wondering who named the Milky Way and things went on from there.

I learned it was called the “Milky Circle” by the Greeks.  The story goes, Zeus brought the infant Hercules to nurse from Hera while she slept.  She woke while the baby suckled and pushed him away.  (His mother was a mortal, one of her husband’s many conquests).  A few drops of milk spilled and formed the Milky Circle. The Romans adopted the name and called it “Via Lactea.” Translated, that means “the road of milk.”

In Germany it’s Milchstrasse. In Norway, it’s called Melkeveien. Both translate to Milky Way in English. But in Finland, it’s called Linnunrata (“path of birds”). In Armenia, it’s “hard goghi chanaparh,” or “Straw Thief’s Way.” In Sweden and Iceland, it’s called Vetrarbrautin and Vintergatan (Winter Way). In East Asia, it’s called “Silver River.”

I love the name Silver River best because it comes from the story of the Weaver Girl and the Buffalo Boy. Two of my poems from Elanthian Love Songs are based on this legend, one for the Weaver Girl and one for the Buffalo Boy (also called “The Cowherd.) I was inspired to write the poems after seeing two beautiful paintings by Steph Law about this legend.

The Gems Project

I hope you’re enjoying our featured photos and artwork. We are now linked with Volunteer Biographers and have recently launched an a really exciting photography/art project:

♡ When we show each other what we find beautiful,

we get a glimpse into each other’s hearts. ♡

Though everyone is welcome to contribute photos and/or artwork, we are currently working with artists who are between homes (homeless).  All contributions of photos, materials and funds will be used for purchase of disposable cameras or sketch pads, gloves and scarves (or hats and sunglasses for the winter) and artist notebooks.

The challenge:  “Show me what you find beautiful.”  When we know what another person finds beautiful, we get a glimpse into their creative hearts.  Our creative hearts connect us instantly and joyously.  Every contributor, follower, volunteer and artist will be a co-creator in this connection.

So far we have three volunteers working in San Francisco, Denver and Philadelphia.  If you are interested, please leave a comment below.  As soon as we have our website up, we’ll have a contact email and a Artist/Volunteer forum for Q&A.

(More here on our About page.)

To kick off the Gems Project, Sara Michele O’Sullivan (Niki Flow) will donating 100 percent of the profits from her book,  Elanthian Love Songs – A Bard’s Tale – a collection of 21 love- and story-poems, featuring the beautiful paintings of Stephanie Pui-Mun Law.

21 MAY 2018 – IMPORTANT UPDATE:

I promised to send artist packs to Sheltering Grace in GA, Shower Up Nashville, my friend MJR in Santa Cruz (our first Volunteer Biographer client); our friend JohnnyO in Denver for his writer’s group; Michelle (Chilis on Wheels) – our next Spotlight Saturday; and Nicole Huguien, friend and founder of Dream Together, (fka Wild Dream Walks) in Hawaii. Each artist pack costs about $25 and includes a disposable camera, waterproof notebook, pens, scarf (or baseball cap in summer), lip balm and chewing gum as well as a waterproof pouch to hold everything.  We got several out since we started and so far we did get one film back which will be developed soon.  To publish Elanthian Love Songs, we purchased a limited copyright for the use of Steph Law’s beautiful paintings.  This was a loan which was repaid recently as a gift from a generous donor MDD. =) (Thank you!♥)  That means that 100 percent of the profits from now on — that means every dollar now since it’s a digital book — go to into these artist packs, shipping and developing the photos.  Very happy to announce that today.  ^_^  In the meantime, I hope to find a place to purchase the cameras and develop the film in bulk more cheaply. The reason I’m plugging Elanthian Love Songs again tonight is because I really want to make good on this promise to get artist packs these beautiful people and friends who serve the homeless folks in our community every day.

Thanks for reading.
